UNA-UK’s 2011 policy-making conference took place on Saturday 18 June at the Temple of Peace in Cardiff.

UNA-UK’s policy objectives are debated and agreed at these regular policy-making conferences. Conference 2011 was a fantastic opportunity for members to help shape UNA-UK’s policy. This year’s conference was especially interesting for members as it was the first under the chairmanship of Sir Jeremy Greenstock, and the first with Phil Mulligan as Executive Director. It also coincided with UNA-UK Board’s development of a new strategic plan, a draft of which was presented by Sir Jeremy and Phil in Cardiff. Prior to the conference, on Friday 17 June 2011, members were given the option to take part in workshops and the ever-popular ‘UN quiz’, and to enjoy a buffet dinner at the Temple of Peace. Format of Conference 2011 The conference followed the successful format of the last few conferences, using a mixture of plenary sessions and smaller, concurrent policy commissions to debate and agree motions. The decisions of the commissions were voted on en masse in plenary.

Convention on Modern Liberty

On 28th February 2009, a very important Human Rights and Civil Liberties event took place in London and six ‘parallel’ venues across the UK  -  that event was the Convention on Modern Liberty. It brought together well over a thousand people, nearly fifty organisations, from the TUC to Amnesty International, and more than a hundred distinguished independent speakers with widely ranging political views and interests, among them Philip Pullman, Lord Bingham, Shami Chakrabarti, Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg, Vince Cable MP, Tory Shadow Justice Secretary Dominic Grieve QC MP, David Davis MP, Labour Minister for Skills David Lammy and Helena Kennedy QC.
